7 assumptions we make in dating

by Rich Santos
In school, I assumed that I didn't have to memorize this awful Sine/Cosine/Tangent trig chart. Unfortunately, the whole semester was based on that chart. Result? D-.
My mom and authority figures have told me my whole life, in the aftermath of various disasters I've created: Never assume!
We make many assumptions in dating. It's a tough balancing act because it's safe to assume things from time to time. For example, if you don't assume some guy is only interested in for sex, you might set yourself up to be hurt.
Here are a few dating assumptions:
You assume I'm hitting on you to get in your pants.
I don't blame women for this assumption. It's the safest way to go, and nine times out of ten you may be right.
But nice guys get the shaft because of the bad behavior of jerks in your past. You might have your guard up too high or interpret a nice guy's words the wrong way. Also, if you act too suspicious of his intentions, a nice guy might get bad vibes from you.
I assume that you're assuming I'm trying to get in your pants when I hit on you.
Because of this, I walk on egg shells, and I'm not assertive. But this approach often makes it look like I'm not interested. Maybe I'm assuming what she's thinking too much, but I hit on girls to get a chance to hang out with them-- not for sex.
You assume I am hitting on you when I so much as talk to you.
The other day my friend and I were conducting interviews in a caf for a research project. We got three guy interviews right off the bat. However, we faced a quandary every time we had to approach a woman: They'll think we're hitting on them.
I can't blame women for this either; many guys aren't motivated to randomly speak to a woman unless they are hitting on them.
I initiate small talk with strangers just to talk. But it sure looks like I'm hitting on a cute girl when I randomly start talking to her. Honestly, that's usually the furthest thing from my mind...but I admit the better the conversation goes, the more I think about hitting on her.
I never assume you're flirting with me.
I might be clueless about women's signals, or I have confidence issues. Often, a girl or guy friend will say: "She was totally flirting with you!" My reply is: "Really? I didn't even notice." Maybe I should learn to be more perceptive.
I assume you're not into me while I'm hitting on you.
Most of the time, even if a girl is laughing and seems happy, I'm thinking: "This is going so badly, I bet she wants to get away."
We assume people are a certain "type."
Humans crave organization, so we sometimes place people into categories. We'll say: "Oh I know this type. I know exactly what they will do and how they will behave," based on things they say, or how they act. But it's important get below the surface because that's where people differentiate themselves from others.
We make assumptions based on fashion.
Fashion can be condescending, like ultra preppie looks. Additionally, when guys see women with huge designer bags, perfect hair and nails, they assume she'll be a lot of work to date. Conversely, jeans and sneakers make a girl seem down to earth. A girl sometimes seems "easy," if she's scantily dressed. I assume anyone who is dressed interestingly or pushing the limits is cooler than me. It's not right, but we are visual creatures and fashion can dictate our perception.
Hopefully, we take the time to actually talk to someone before assuming. This is the only way I'll find my tom-princess: the down to earth personality with the high maintenance appearance (though my guy friends say she doesn't exist).
Assuming is safe, but dangerous. We must avoid type-casting. It goes beyond conversation, because we even type cast people based on what they say.
Annoyingly, in the dating world, we are afforded a quick snapshot of someone-- say, at a bar or party forcing snap judgement. Additional layers like Facebook profiles may help, but the old fashioned way of spending time with someone is the best way to confirm or dispel assumptions.
Are you guilty of assuming in dating? If so, what kinds of assumptions do you make? Do you agree with mine above? What affect does assuming have on dating?

how to be a seductress

Being a Seductress
This blog is going to get me into trouble. But I am going to write it anyway.
Why am I intentionally putting myself in hot water? I feel a responsibility to share my seduction secrets with other women. I am a belly dancer who celebrates her sexuality while dancing and in the bedroom. The dance has taught me many secrets of pleasure, technique and seduction.

Every magazine is filled with tips on beauty and even advice on acting and dressing sexier. However, I have yet to see an article that empowers women to enjoy being sexy for their own pleasure. I feel like a modern day version of the temples of the Kama Sutra, in which women passed on the Art and Science of Love to other women. I will take the heat because some women will benefit from what I have to say.

As much as our culture is obsessed with it, sex is still taboo. Sex is everywhere in TV, Movies and advertising, yet nothing is as threatening to both men and women than a woman who owns her sexual power. So much so that even my sisters in the belly dance community find me controversial because I believe there is nothing wrong with celebrating the intrinsically sexy aspect to the dance.

I was 24 when I discovered my power of being a seductress. I had the opportunity to travel throughout the Middle East being employed at nightclubs with 1-month residencies, performing 6 nights a week.  I had the days free to explore the city and absorb the culture. Traveling to foreign cities by myself was exhilarating, educational and terrifying.  I found it liberating to be in a location for a predetermined amount of time not knowing a soul and getting a fresh start a month later. Seeing the Middle East through the eyes of a blonde belly dancer was a fascinating experience. I was in ancient cities performing an ancient dance.

My sexual epiphany happened in Istanbul, Turkey. Something about the unique mix of Europe and Middle East culture, the weather, the hotel they set me up in and the gorgeous men brought out the seductress in me. This was my first taste of having several men pursuing me at once.  I was shocked to discover the extent to which men will go to “win” a woman. Truth is, I did very little to encourage their behavior. I wasn't having sex with them (sex before marriage is uncommon in Turkey) and hadn't even gone on dates with two men.  I was showered with gifts and since they knew there was competition, they started to get creative. One memorable gift was my url and designing a website for me. One guy gave me his car. However, his father, screaming at my balcony, awoke me that night. It appears it wasn’t his to give away.  One of my admirers told me that I scared him – because there was no hope for him to resist me – he would give me anything I wanted.

His fear was logical: in seduction, women hold all the cards.  He recently became my Facebook friend and sent me a virtual car, villa and diamond ring. I accepted them…how could I not?

how to kiss, types of kisses, kissing step by step

by pyar
From the kiss of admiration to platonic kiss to a passionate kiss like you see in the movies, bringing your lips in contact with an important person else's is a sign of affection that most people enjoy.

But since there are many kinds of kisses to reflect the many level of liking you can have for an important person, it can be nerve-wracking!

Don't worry, though--this article will go over more than a few kinds of kisses, as well as when, and how, to give them.
Kissing Step by Step

Step 1

Face your partner (just as if you were departing to give them a peck like we learned above). Make sure your faces are somewhat close together--closer than you would be if you were just talking to a celebrity!

Step 2

Lean in slowly. Tilt your head to one side as you lean in. This is very significant in this kiss--otherwise you'll bump noses!

Step 3

Part your lips, but don't open your mouth like you're going to eat impressive. More like you were taking a drink from a bottle. This is done at the last second before your lips meet theirs. Don't open your mouth all the method down as you lean in to kiss them!

Step 4

Gently touch your lips to your cohorts. Your mouths will be a little diagonal to each other, or they can be almost at right angles.
Open your mouth a little more as your lips meet.

As you kiss, you may press a little harder (but not too hard!) if you'd like, and then you may prefer to go your head slightly side to side as you gradually kiss them again and again.

Remember to go slowly and soak in the fervor of this kiss!

Girls do a lot of talking about the first kiss.

Where will it be? What kind of kiss will it be? If you are young, and the girl is hyper, then you don't want to dissatisfy her with just a kiss on the cheek. Kiss her on the lips.

Draw back, smile at her. If she is respond positively, then go in again, this time using the mouth, opening the lips, and maybe addition some tongue.

Make sure the first kiss is in a special place - never in the movies. On a hill, on the stage in a abandoned theatre, by a fountain in a secluded park.
How to Kiss a Girl Physically

Kiss her like this for a few more times and leisurely move her towards you by grabbing her waist or her head and pulling her closer to you.

Once you do this, and you can sense that she likes what you are doing, you at the start go using your tongue gradually.

Type of Kiss

1. Cheek Kiss - A friendly, "I in reality like you" kiss. Often the preferred kissing method of a first date. With your hands on your partner's shoulders, gently brush your lips across her cheek.

2. Earlobe Kiss - Gently sip and suck the earlobe. Avoid louder sucking noises as ears are sensitized noise detectors.

3. Eye Kiss - Hold your partner's head with both hands and slowly move their head in the way you wish your kiss to go... then slowly kiss up towards your partner's eyes and give them a tender kiss on top of their closed eyes.

4. Foot Kiss - An erotic and idealistic gesture. It may tickle, but relax and enjoy it!

To give a toe kiss by quietly suck the toes and then flippantly kissing the foot. It helps to gently massage the base of the foot while performing the kiss.

5. French Kiss - The kiss connecting the tongue. Some call this the "Soul Kiss" because the life and soul are thought to pass from side to side the mouth's breath in the swap across tongues. Surprisingly, the French call this "The English Kiss".

6. Hot and Cold Kiss - Lick your partner's lips so that they're warm, and then gently blow on them. The sudden cold blast make for a sensual explosion, and they will often try it on you next, as well as get very fervent.

why are we such bad flirts?

This may look like flirting to us, but it's reading to guys like she has an eye infection. (ThinkStock Photos)
This may look like flirting to us, but it's reading to guys like she has an eye infection. (ThinkStock Photos)

A new global study found that American women are among some of the world's worst flirts. The social networking site Badoo compiled over 90 million romantic connections, to discover State-side ladies had the lowest track record for flirting, second only to Ecuadorian women.

How can this be? We've devoted a sector of the publishing industry to the laws of attraction. We created the term 'sexpert.' We've got relationship gurus, countless magazine articles, and few television series  all dedicated to the fine art of flirting. And still, we're coming up short.

Perhaps that over-analyzation is the problem. We get lost in too much advice, and end up thinking we're flirting when we're not.
Dating blogger Carley Spindel suggests that our micro-managed approaches to wooing the opposite sex end up sending arbitrary messages. Take body language. Lots of love experts suggest leg crossing, twisting your hair, leaning your shoulders in. But Spindel says, the actions are "difficult for men to understand." The only thing they really pick up on is the touch. It's so simple, but it's not nearly employed as frequently.

And if you're communicating online, it's impossible. But we're not good at online flirting either. Spindel notes that subtle attempts to communicate barely make an impact. Guys need more than just a wall post, an email with a link or a Facebook "like" tag to get the picture.

So what does work? Ask Spanish women. They ranked the most flirtatious in the Badoo study. Their tactic is simple: make the first move. According to the research, they were most likely to reach out to a prospective guy, and follow up by requesting a date.

It goes against every our mothers and the bestselling book, The Rules, taught us. Both clearly stipulate playing hard to get is key to romantic success. Turn down date requests, ignore phone calls and above all never ever make the first move, they dictate. But in today's online dating world, the same rules don't seem to apply.

5 things men do wrong in the bedroom

woman unhappy in bed
By now you may have perfected the missionary position and learned how to unhook a bra with one hand. But there's still plenty you could be doing to get women more interested in having sex with you.
"If you're being offered a template on how to titillate and stimulate your woman, take it!" says Dr. Yvonne K. Fulbright, sex educator and author of "Sultry Sex Talk to Seduce Any Lover." "She's not suggesting that you're bad in bed; she's just letting you know what her preferences are."
Here's a secret: Women like having sex. A lot of them love it, and a few even think about it all the time. But their shortcoming is that they often want men to be mind readers. Many women aren't confident enough to ask for what they want in bed, so instead they accept a so-so sex life. Tonight, start a conversation about sex. Talk about the things that turn you on and ask her if there's anything she'd like you to do differently.
"Since everyone is individual when it comes to likes and dislikes, the only way to make sure you're having a hot sex life with your lady is to listen and incorporate her suggestions," says Fulbright.
If you're more open about sex, your partner will begin to enjoy herself more, which means that you'll reap the benefits, too.
Mistake No. 1: Not Taking ChargeWomen are leaders in the workplace. They run the household and can do pretty much anything they put their minds to. But when it comes to sex, they often want you to take charge and "be the man." Anything halfhearted and tentative is a turnoff.
"If you're holding back, she will, too," says Fulbright. "You need to unleash your carnal side and make her feel wanted in an almost unbridled way."
Mistake No. 2: Sticking to the Same Old RoutineIf you've been with the same person for a while, you probably know the exact moves that are needed in order to pleasure your partner. But sex can become as tedious as watching reruns if you never change things up.
"While there's something to be said about the tried and true, mixing things up is what keeps your brain and your other vital parts stimulated," says Fulbright. "She'll be more intrigued with you if the sex has a couple of fun twists and turns."
Tonight, surprise her by having sex in a different room of the house or in a different position, or switch things up by keeping your clothes on. You're sure to get a big reaction.
Mistake No. 3: Focusing on the Finish LineLife is about the journey, not the destination, and the same thing is true for sex. When you're frantically laboring away toward your own climax, it's usually not that fun for your partner. Truly hot sex comes from taking your time and exploring.
"Unless you're both into having a quickie, being goal oriented is the biggest turnoff," says Fulbright. "The ride -- the anticipation -- is half the fun, so enjoy it."
Spend some time just kissing and touching the parts of your partner's body that you may be neglecting. Make sure she's satisfied first before you cross the finish line.
Mistake No. 4: Not Making Love Frequently EnoughMost men say that if it were up to them, they'd be having sex every night of the week. But how many times has your partner found you asleep on the couch with ESPN blaring on the television?
"If you don't seem interested in sex, then your woman's inner good girl won't want to put pressure on you," says Fulbright. "Don't be afraid to have sex just for sex's sake, as this ups testosterone and libido and makes you both desire it even more."
If that's not enough of an incentive, having more sex can actually lengthen your lifespan. "The average American has sex once a week, and we know from studies, that doubling that to twice a week can mean you live three years longer," Dr. Oz told The Boston Herald.
Initiate sex even if you're tired or not really in the mood. Once you get going, chances are you'll be into it.
Mistake No. 5: Not Giving Women More MassagesGiving a massage can sound about as much fun as a trip to that fancy soap and candle store in the mall. But by spending time touching your partner in a sensual but not quite sexual way, you'll make her more relaxed and open to the idea of having sex.
"Massage can be critical to helping her relax and inviting her sexual response," says Fulbright. "Plus, this kind of human touch feels so good and is so needed these days. Cultivating the sensual, as well as the sexual, gets you major brownie points in the bedroom."
Dim the lights, offer her a glass of cucumber water and break out the massage oil. Pretty soon she'll be saying, "A little to the left, please. Ah ... right there."

6 annoying things couples do, and how they'll destroy a relationship

Your double dates keep getting canceled. You're the only bridesmaid without a plus one.  And every time you make a plan with a friend, it's followed by the question: "just you and me, right?" These are dead give-aways you're one half of an annoying couple. You could be great as individuals but there's something about your combined forces that isn't complimentary. It might have to do with the pet names, the inside jokes and the reckless P.D.A. while other people are trying to hold a conversation with you.

But you're in love! Why is everyone trying to ruin it? They're not. Those put-off peers are doing you a service. A new book asserts that the things you do as couple that annoy people, could do more damage to your own relationship. "We realized that when two people live together, they can fall into bad habits of getting too comfortable with one another. That's when the attraction starts to fade," explains Maggie Arana and Julien Davis, co-authors of the new book,
"Stop Calling Him Honey and Start Having Sex."

Obviously, they recommend a moratorium on pet names that are getting out of hand. But that's just the tip of the annoying couple iceberg. Consider some other "bad in public, worse in private" habits that need breaking for the sake of your relationship.

The schmoopie curseOne of "Seinfeld's" greatest lessons, aside from mistrusting fat-free fro-yo, was that a pet name can kill a relationship. Anyone remember Jerry's agonizing baby name he shared with his perky blond girlfriend? Thankfully, she only lasted one episode.  In researching their book, Arana and Davis compiled hundreds of gag-reflexive pet names from couples. "McMuffin Poopen Cakes" was their personal favorite.

But, they discovered, what annoyed outsiders did more damage to the couple using the names. "Every time we found that they were calling each other these kinds of names, they were not having a great sex life," explain the authors. Their hypothesis? "Words have a lot of impact on how you view each other and also yourself--especially when they are repeated day after day after day. 'Honey' takes away each partner's sexuality and individuality. It's a totally androgynous word. And this doesn't help those feelings of sexuality for your partner...you just keep taking that away each and every time you use those kinds of words."

The solution: use your real names, that's why you have them.

The "we never fight" lieSome couples like to boast about how they never argue. Cue eye-roll. They may be making other couples feel inadequate but they're not doing themselves any favors either. "It's a sign they're being relationship perfectionists," says
Laurie Puhn, a New York-based couples mediator. "Here's the truth: happy couples do fight. Not everyone is going to be in agreement all the time, but you have to check in with each other about your differences."

By not airing grievances, they're avoiding a deeper level of communication. Puhn recommends a "healthy fight" by asking each other neutral questions like "Am I missing something?" and "Can you help me understand?" "What you're doing is learning to understand why you differ on an opinion," says Puhn, who just came out with a book on the topic called
"Fight Less, Love More." "The goal is not to focus on what happened but how you'll come to an agreement when the same thing comes up in the future."

The implied couple dateWhen two people become one annoying couple, they tend to assume their partner is always invited, like it or not. That ultimately leads to what some call "boyfriend-bombing," or showing up for hang-time with an extra person in tow.

You may be oblivious in the moment but it's nuclear to your relationship. "People in healthy relationships do things independently," says Puhn. "They need room to grow  as individuals, otherwise they have nothing new to share with each other when they're alone."

The kid obsessionAs adorable as kids are, they don't make for great grown-up talk. But some couples can only bring news of report cards, teachers meetings and swim lessons to the party. "It's self centered behavior," says Puhn. "Telling other people about your kid's mundane activities is like talking about yourself the whole time." It's boring for your friends, but it's worse for the bedroom. Talking exclusively as parents de-sexualizes your connection. Slowly, your initial attraction dwindles and your connection with each other becomes reliant on your child. "When your child leaves, you'll have no foundation or other common interests to keep you engaged," adds Puhn

The constant fix-upsIt's great when happy couples want to match-make their friends. But some take it too far, constantly creating set-ups and badgering their single friends to link up. What's up with that? "Not a good sign," says Puhn. "If you're setting friends up more than twice a year, you may be making it more of a priority than it should be. It can mean you're living vicariously through your single friends in an effort to connect yourself back to the dating the world."  If that's the case, you have bigger things to focus on than your single friends.

Constant P.D.AThere's a kiss in public, and then there's the make-out session at your friend's dinner party. Couples who overdo the public lust may be overcompensating for a lack of communication, suggests Puhn.
"It might mean that physical attraction is the dominating force and that can be a problem," she says. "If you constantly need to show the world your affection, it suggests a lack of confidence about other aspects in your relationship." Maybe all that time smothering each other with your lips has clouded your ability to get to know each other the old fashioned way--with words. "You have to have an emotional connection and an ability to connect verbally if you want to deepen a relationship," says Puhn. You also want to keep your friends, and all that making out isn't as pleasurable for your witnesses as it is for you.
